About the role

Job Purpose

To provide a visible, professional, and approachable security presence across college campuses, helping to create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.

The Campus Security Officer plays a key role in maintaining safety, supporting the college’s safeguarding and wellbeing objectives, and helping to build a positive culture of respect and responsibility within the college community.

Key Responsibilities

Campus Presence & Engagement

  • Deliver high-visibility but approachable patrols around key areas of the campus, including entrances, social spaces, car parks, and perimeters.
  • Build positive relationships with students, staff, and visitors by being approachable, polite, and supportive.
  • Balance deterrence and engagement — maintaining vigilance while ensuring the environment feels open, safe, and welcoming.
  • Provide information, directions, and general assistance to anyone on site, promoting a culture of support and inclusion.
  • Be observant and proactive in identifying potential issues before they escalate.

Incident Response & Reporting

  • Respond promptly and appropriately to incidents, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all involved.
  • Record all incidents accurately using company systems
  • Communicate effectively with the control room, college personnel staff, and emergency services where necessary.
  • Manage and de-escalate challenging behaviour calmly and professionally.
  • Support safeguarding and welfare processes by reporting concerns in line with college and company procedures.

Safety, Security & Compliance

  • Monitor access control points and ensure only authorised individuals enter restricted areas.
  • Conduct routine checks of doors, gates, and alarm systems.
  • Observe and report hazards, maintenance issues, or environmental concerns (e.g. lighting, fire exits, damage).
  • Maintain awareness of college policies on behaviour, health & safety, and safeguarding.
  • Assist with evacuation procedures, drills, and emergency responses.

Community & Partnership Working

  • Work collaboratively with college security teams, facilities management, and local police or partner agencies where appropriate.
  • Share intelligence and support initiatives that enhance safety and student wellbeing.
  • Help promote a culture of respect, responsibility, and mutual care within the college community.
  • Contribute positively to college events, open days, and community engagement activities.

Requirements

  • Valid SIA Door Supervisor Licence (required)
  • Enhanced DBS check (required) – candidates must either hold a current Enhanced DBS certificate or be willing to undergo one prior to commencing employment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport across diverse groups.
  • Calm and professional under pressure, with sound judgment and integrity.
  • Confident in using technology such as bodycams, radios, and digital reporting systems.
  • Must be able to commute to Ellesmere Port College
  • Smart and professional appearance; commitment to wearing uniform at all times.
  • Willingness to work flexibly, including occasional evenings or weekends to support college events.
  • Physical Intervention Experience

Desirable

  • First Aid qualification.
  • Experience in education, campus, or community-based security roles.
  • Understanding of safeguarding principles and the Prevent Duty.
  • Awareness of issues affecting young adults and college environments.

Hours of Work

Core hours: 8:00am – 4:00pm, Monday to Friday.
Some flexibility required to support events, open evenings, or altered college hours.
